While many people may be aware that felony criminal charges are far more severe than misdemeanor criminal charges, they are likely less familiar with what the specific felony or misdemeanor classes are and what range of penalties they are associated with in the event of a conviction.

In this blog series, we will outline the various felony and misdemeanor classes as set by Colorado law, as well as the range of potential punishments that can be handed down in the event a person is convicted of a specific felony or misdemeanor crime. Keep in mind, however, that:

  • The information disclosed in this blog series is general.
  • Various details of your case can impact whether the full extent of a potential penalty may be handed down in your case.
  • You can get more specific information regarding your case, your rights and your best options for your defense by contacting one of the Colorado Springs criminal defense lawyers at Shimon Kohn, P,C.

An Overview of Colorado Felony Crime Classes and Sentences

The following table provides an overview of the felony crime classes and associated sentencing ranges per Colorado law.

Felony Class Range of Possible Prison Sentence Range of Possible Fines
Class 1 Felony

(C.R.S. § 18-1.3-401)

Life in prison

Class 2 Felony

Class 3 Felony

(C.R.S. § 18-1.3-401)

4 to 12 years $3,000 to $750,000
Class 4 Felony

(C.R.S. § 18-1.3-401)

It’s important to point out that:

  • Not all felony offenses in Colorado are classified in one of the above felony classes. For such “unclassified” felony offenses, people can be subject to up to 5 years in prison and fines of up to $100,000 upon conviction of these crimes.
  • The classes and sentences associated with felony offenses can be changed by the Colorado legislature, which periodically updates criminal laws and sentencing guidelines within the state.

Be sure to check out the upcoming second installment of this blog series for an overview of misdemeanor crime classes and the associated range of penalties that can be imposed upon conviction.
