After nearly three years, jury selection in the Aurora theater shooting case against James Holmes is set to get underway today. The current jury pool includes about 9,000 potential jurors who, in a series of pre-selected groups, will come to the courthouse over the coming weeks to complete an extensive questionnaire.

Once this process has been completed and certain candidates have been dismissed, the next phase of jury selection in the Aurora theater shooting case will take place; this will involve questioning the remaining possible jurors in court. This second phase of the jury selection process is expected to get underway sometime in the middle of February.

Jury Selection Expected to End by May or June

The jury selection process has officially begun in the long-anticipated Aurora theater shooting case. This process is expected to conclude by June 2015.

The jury selection process has officially begun in the long-anticipated Aurora theater shooting case. This process is expected to conclude by June 2015.

While the involved process of jury selection in the Aurora theater shooting case has been kicked off today, many legal professionals closely following this case have noted that the chosen jurors probably won’t be seated until this coming May or June.

When the selected jurors finally take their seats, they will be facing the difficult task of:

  • Hearing the details of the Aurora theater shooting, during which 12 people were shot to death and 70 others were injured
  • Deciding whether the defendant, James Holmes, was legally insane when this horrific crime occurred, as Holmes’ plea in this case has been entered as “not guilty by reason of insanity”
  • Deciding whether the death penalty should be imposed in this case.

As Judge Carlos Samour has explained to potential jurors for this case, “no one should assume that Mr. Holmes committed a crime just because he has been charged in this case…Mr. Holmes is presumed innocent.”
